This installation work is part of an enquiry into my past, my familial connections and my sense of identity as a Welsh artist that was born in London with a Czech name. The work has been developed as screenprint on stained fabric, combining photo-transfer and papercut stencil techniques to create the collaged hangings. Each piece explores a different place where I have lived, or I have family from. The use of stained and frayed fabric with distorted and sometimes faded images echoes the transience of memories, home and the lives of relatives. I chose this combined approach to working, as the grain of the printed images and the weave of the fabric complement each other to create partially see-through images which can be viewed on both sides. The quality of textile hints at the representation of clothing or curtains and emphasises a homely and nostalgic presence, within which you can become immersed in the human-sized suspended hangings.
